Mermaid I (diptych)
Paint markers and acrylic on paper, 140 x 100 cm, 2023
Sargassum is an algae that proliferates in the sea thanks to the contribution of nutrients (phosphate, nitrate) caused by intensive agriculture.
The Haitian mermaid is a variation of an almost universal myth. The presence in Haiti of the belief in aquatic deities has to do with the passage of waters during the slave trade: many slaves perished on slave ships and were thrown into the sea. It was believed that his spirit traveled under the sea and returned to Africa, the land of origin and freedom. This idea correlates with African traditions according to which the afterlife is aquatic and many deities move under the sea.
